They've replaced the duets/honeycombs as the best "all or nothing" product, meaning if you need to cover the window, they appear and then go away when the need goes away. 3 Basic Roller Shade Types

  • Blackout — meaning like a sheet of canvas. This is like the movie screen that comes down, and no light comes in, even though there might be a slight issue with a light on the side.
  • Light Filter — "See through" without providing any privacy, especially at night when it's dark outside and the lights are on inside. These are the products found in all the Chick-fil-As. It takes care of the glare but allows one to see what's happening on the other side. Darker colors give better visibility over lighter colors like white. The lighter colors have a tendency to illuminate themselves like a white sheet over a window.
  • Light Filtering with Privacy — think of an onion skin or piece of paper. It diffuses the light, and you can't see through. A lot of honeycomb shades were sold with this same effect.

Motorized Roller Shades

The Roller shades can be motorized. The motors are wireless and rechargeable. Most charges last 12-14 months. We sell the Somfy and Rollease Acmeda motors. The Somfy motor is what's made the industry. For a really large opening, it's still the best but requires 120V plug-in power. Hunter Douglas has used these motors on their larger shades for years. Rollease Motors came on the market about 7 years ago. They are GREAT with a perfect price point. Somfy has some suitable low voltage motors, but we think the Rollease motor is the future. In the last 12 months, Hunter Douglas has begun marketing Rollease Motors under the Private label. The Rollease Motor is the motor to beat.
